Borrow Pits

, Fort Nelson

 Open

Show on Map Get Directions

These small lakes have been created out of old gravel pits along the Alaska Highway. There are 11 borrow Pits in total between Prophet River and Fort Nelson, ranging in size and identified by a blue fish sign with the pit number. These little lakes are beautiful little spots along the highway and can offer a nice place to stretch your legs, let the dog swim, have lunch or drop a line. Borrow pits 1, 4 & 9 are stocked yearly and marked with large green signs.

Many of these pits are also home to animals including beavers, which can be seen swimming or slapping their tails on the water. As always enjoy their company from a distance and remember it is their home.

These borrow pits are open for use, but please respect physical distancing requirements when using these and other areas in the Northern Rockies.
